Basalt Rock Columnar Formations

Basalt rock columnar formations are wonders of Nature's creations. When thick lava flows from volcanic eruptions and cools, it contracts vertically but cracks perpendicular to its directional flow with remarkable geometric regularity. In most cases, a regular grid of remarkable hexagonal extrusions are formed that appear to be made out from molds. Basalt also forms in different but equally fascinating ways when eruptions are exposed to air or water.
One of the most famous basalt rock formations is the Giant's Causeway on the coast of Ireland (photos shown here). Basalt Rock - Giant's Causeway #1 Basalt Rock - Giant's Causeway #2 Basalt Rock - Giant's Causeway #3 Basalt Rock - Giant's Causeway #4 |

The largest and most widely recognized basalt rock formation would be Devils Tower in Wyoming, USA.
