Magdeburg Aqueduct - A River Over A River
The Magdeburg Water Bridge is a 918 meter long traversable aqueduct crossing over the Elbe River. It links the Elbe-Havel Canal to the Mittelland Canal. Ships navigating the two canals previously had to make a 12-kilometer detour to reach their destinations. Low water levels at the Elbe River also often prevented fully-laden barges from making a crossing. Construction of the Magdeburg Aqueduct began in the 1930's, but was derailed by WWII and the subsequent division of Germany. Work was resumed in 1997 as part of a reunification project. The project is symbolic as it connects the former East Germany to the West German nation. It was finally completed, at the cost of 500 million euros, and opened to the public in 2003. |
