Japanese Steak, Anyone?

Who doesn't love steak?

But an incredible article on Japanese steak, which came out in Yahoo News last weekend, might make your stomach turn.

It says that Japanese researchers have synthesized meat from proteins found in human excrement. The poop-meat concoction is prepared by first isolating bacteria from the basic elements of food, like protein, carbohydrates, and fats, in the human waste. The food elements are then extracted and recombined to make the meat.

The synthesized meat is made up of 63% protein, 25% carbohydrates, 3% lipids, and 9% minerals. To increase the flavor, soy protein is added. Food coloring is used to make the meat appear red.

The idea for this came up after Tokyo Sewage commissioned the researchers to find a way on what to do with the abundance of sewage in mud.

Douglas Powell, a professor of food safety at Kansas State University, says that it could be quite safe to eat as long as it is cooked.

He says the idea is not different from eating plants which have been fertilized with manure or other excrement, since these become part of the plants.

So, the next time you order your steak, be very sure about the type of meat that will be served to you! Ha ha ha...

When the world's population grows beyond what remaining natural food sources can feed, could you consider this stomach-churning Japanese steak idea and set aside the "yuck' factor?
