San Alfonso del Mar Resort

San Alfonso del Mar Resort's man-made saltwater lagoon at Algarrobo, on Chile's southern coast, has been attracting huge crowds since it opened in December 2006.

The Guinness Book of Records has named the vast pool beside the sea in Chile as the biggest and deepest in the world.

The pool is more than 1,000 yards long, occupies 20 acres, has a 115 ft deep end, and holds 66 million gallons of water. It is equivalent to the combined size of 6,000 regular swimming pools.

By comparison, the world's second biggest pool, the Orthlieb - nicknamed the Big Splash - in Morocco, is merely 150 yards long and 100 yards wide. And an Olympic size pool measures some 50 yards by 25 yards.

It took Crystal Lagoons Corporation, a local company, 5 years to build the world's biggest swimming pool at an estimated cost that hovered between $1.5 B to $2 B. Estimates of maintenance costs run roughly between $2 M to $4 M annually.

Its turquoise waters are so crystal clear that the bottom is clearly visible even at the deep end.

Chile's monster pool, which is just 60 miles from the capital city of Santiago, uses a computer-controlled suction and filtration system to keep fresh seawater in permanent circulation, drawing it in from the ocean at one end and pumping it out at the other.

The heat of the sun warms the pool water to 26 degrees C, making it nine degrees warmer than the adjoining sea.
