Puerto Princesa Underground River

The Puerto Princesa Underground River had been officially named, only last January 28, 2012, as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature, a worthy and deserving successor to the still magnificent Banawe Rice Terraces, which was one of the original 7 Wonders of the World.

The underground river is part of an area known as the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park which lies on the northern coast of the island province of Palawan, southwest of Manila..

Also known as the Palawan Underground River, it has been declared as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO.

Entrance to the Puerto Princesa Underground River is a short hike from the town of Sabang.

The 8.2 kilometer navigable river used to be the longest known subterranean river in the world, until the discovery of a longer one in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula in 2007.

Breathtaking stalactite and stalagmite formations adorn the whole stretch of the cave.

Thousands of bats and dozens of sea denizens inhabit the cave and the river.

The subterranean river runs through a massive cave and exits directly to the West Philippine Sea.

The Puerto Princesa Underground River is a "must see, must experience" for local and foreign tourists alike.
